The American Society of Perfumers, Inc. (ASP) is a non-profit organization, founded in 1947, with a current membership of approximately three hundred qualified perfumers. The ASP has officers and a Board of Directors, who are nominated and voted into office by the membership to uphold the Bylaws and provide a vision for the future.
The main goal of the ASP is to foster and encourage the art and science of perfumery in the United States and to represent our community internationally. This is accomplished by promoting professional exchange with a high standard of conduct within the fragrance industry. Achieving these goals happens through multiple channels, networking and select events as well as co-sponsoring and developing co-relationships with other organizations. Through these avenues, we provide a forum where leading members of the fragrance community have the opportunity to speak and present information on all aspects of the industry.
Our new mission initiated in 2014 to educate, support and promote the perfumer aspires to insure these goals above while expanding upon the resources made available to our member perfumers. These pillars do not just look to address perfumery expertise, but real-life issues experienced by our membership providing different avenues of networking, knowledge getting and assistance where we can provide, leaving the integrity of our craft intact.

Historically, we have held iconic industry events that included the NY Perfumery Symposium held annually until 2013. This iconic event drew many fragrance industry magnates and paved the way for many careers. Venues such as the Waldorf Astoria, The Plaza Hotel, The Pierre, Lincoln Center, Marriot Marquis, Grand Hyatt and Cipriani became mainstays of the fragrance industry lore. Honorees and attendees included everyone from celebrities to fashion icons. Oscar de la Renta, Ertha Kitt, Karl Lagerfeld, Gianni Versace, John Varvatos and many more. Acknowledgment of their fragrance contribution to the industry brought prestige and celebration to the basis of fragrance, perfumery.
Based on the evolution of the industry and economics within we have evolved this historical legacy into our current premier event the WPC. The scope and industry have grown to encompass so much more than ever and our global event addresses these subjects and issues, focused on the perfumer and the art, while still paying homage to our past events.
Another long-heralded event, our PCA Awards ceremony, providing acknowledgment of great works in our profession is also iconoclast in our circles and is under consideration for a return in a modern form. Many perfumers, noteworthy individuals, fine fragrance creations, new consumer products, and corporations in the fragrance world have been recognized for their individual contribution to the industry.
That spirit of community and acknowledgment still survives today in our new experiential events promoting creativity and inspiration within the art of perfumery. Creative exchange exposés promoting and benefiting our membership thru revealing the art and inspiring expression. An Evening of Pairings, an experiential journey through fragrance, food and wine starring Perfumers, Sommelier and Chef has been an amazing success. Our Evening of Exploration - Orchid Mystique, a creative explosion of perfumer expertise all on display to evoke insight into the process of creation. Additionally, field trips to houses of material supply and intimate perfumery events have been awe-inspiring and more are in the works.
The ASP also sponsors charity events as a means of giving back to those in need, an important part of a culture of creativity. Inclusive in this forum is our Annual Golf Outing, a time for networking, good play and giving. Past events promoting Toys for Tots and donations to Storm Sandy victims, Spina Bifida, Cancer Research and Drug Addiction are just several of the past recipients.
Our premier event the World Perfumery Congress is held every two years. This global event brings together perfumers, industry titans, fragrance icons and new concepts of fragrance for the future. Formerly held in Cannes, France we now hold the event in multiple locations around the world alternating between Europe and the United States with future plans to expand our horizons. Our event partner Perfumer & Flavorist - Allured business media, brings a high level of professionalism and direction providing a focus on industry trends and opportunities relating to the perfumer. Our next WPC will be held in South Beach Miami, USA.
