American Society Of Perfumers

Educate Promote Support

Welcome to the American Society of Perfumers

As established professionals in the Art and Science of Perfumery our members develop the fragrances of the world!

The American Society of Perfumers, Inc. (ASP) is a non-profit organization founded in 1947. Our current membership is approximately three hundred professional perfumers, all based in the U.S. At the ASP, our primary goal is to uphold the high standards of professional perfumery in the U.S. while representing our members internationally.

By supporting our members through apprenticeships and networking events, we ensure the continuation of the traditions of classical perfumery. We host annual meetings and sponsor events in order to promote public engagement with the fragrance industry in the U.S.  Our active role in the World Perfumery Congress, a bi-annual international networking and educational event, connects the ASP’s members and our ideas with the global fragrance community.

The ASP Perfumer

Before becoming perfumers, American Society of Perfumers members studied, apprenticed with a master perfumer, and worked in a fragrance laboratory for many years. The training process to become an ASP perfumer is intense, rigorous, and lengthy. The first task for an apprentice perfumer is to study hundreds of natural and synthetic materials, committing them to memory. Once the apprentice develops a strong olfactive memory, they develop their formulation skills by performing countless experiments. These experiments involve the study, observation, and mastery of the effects of ingredients both alone and in complex fragrance compositions.
